Peter Habeler

Northern Light proudly presents Peter Habeler—the fi rst man ever to ascend Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. He is a living proof of turning the impossible into possible. Nobody believed it would be possible to ascend Mount Everest without extra oxygen, but along with his partner Reinhold Messner, Peter Habeler did it.

In Helsinki Mr Habeler will lead us along a challenging path to the highest peaks of the world under the title “The Summit is the Goal”. He will be speaking about the courage to enter into something new. “It is not only the mountains but also the game we all play, moving on a very thin line between failure and success”, Habeler says. He speaks about the ups and downs in a mountaineer’s career and about the luckiest thing of all: staying alive.

Peter Habeler was born in Mayrhofen Austria in 1942. He was a certifi ed mountain guide and skiing instructor by the age of 21. In the mid 60s he and his climbing partner Reinhold Messner astonished the mountaineering world with an impressive series of climbs. In addition to Mount Everest, Habeler has also summited four other eight-thousanders (mountains over 8 000 meters high): Cho Oyu (Nepal/Tibet), Nanga Parbat (Pakistan), Kangchenjunga (India/Nepal) and Hidden Peak (Pakistan/China). Currently Mr Habeler is an author and a teacher in his own Ski and Mountaineering School in his hometown Mayrhofen. Moreover, Peter Habeler enjoys travelling around the world, speaking about how to conquer one’s own Everest.
